Samuel Pufendorf (1632-1694) was the most influential natural law theorist of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. His massive main work, On the Law of Nature and Nations, and its text book version, On the Duty of Man and Citizen, appeared in numerous editions and were translated into all major European languages. Knowledge of Pufendorf was regarded as an integral part of an all-round education and his theory was seen as a paradigmatic example of a distinctively modern approach to moral and political issues in the tradition founded by Hugo Grotius and Thomas Hobbes.

This work offers a detailed analysis of the comception of morality which guided Pufendorf's enterprise. The author discusses the general intellectual framework within which Pufendorf formulated his idea of the natural moral law; the foundations of his "scientific" justification of natural law; his views on the normative character of natural law; and his account of natural law as a social institution.
